Although there is no set replacement interval for this part, it is a good idea to replace it if it is over 10 years or 100,000 miles old (I have seen them fail in much shorter time, but I have also seen them last as long as 150,000 miles). At least carry a spare one, as trying to find one during that long trip will be very hard to do.
